National Business Etiquette Week 2021: Top 5 Tips for New Grads

While many things about graduation have changed due to COVID-19, these classic tips for making a positive first impression during a job interview will help you outclass the competition.

  1. Remember the importance of positive eye contact. For the past year, we’ve all been communicating online, so it’s more important than ever to ensure that you demonstrate proper eye contact during in-person interviews.

  1. Extend a confident handshake. There are several ways to ensure you’re shaking hands properly. Read our “How-To” article here: https://www.psow.edu/blog/shaking-hands/. If you prefer not to shake hands, PSOW President Pamela Eyring provides alternatives in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G5U5u_58tHQ

  1. Proper Seating. Don’t just plop down when you enter the room. Wait to be asked to sit down and allow the host to indicate in which chair you should be seated.

  1. Be aware of your digital footprint. Many employers use social media to research candidates on Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. Make sure your social media channels reflect content and images that represent you in a positive light.

  1. Send a thank you note. Did you know that sending a handwritten thank you note increases your chances of being hired by 5%? Taking a few moments to thank a potential employer for their time and consideration will make a positive impression and help you stand out from other candidates.
