5 Simple Ways to Show Gratitude this Thanksgiving

Did you know President George H.W. Bush was the first president to pardon a turkey? It’s true…and since then, every president has pardoned one lucky turkey who escapes the oven and even goes on to live full lives at children’s farms and even as grand marshals in Disneyland’s Thanksgiving parade! Now those are some grateful birds! Here are some simple things we can all do this Thanksgiving to show our appreciation for those in our life.

Volunteering. We all know someone who may be spending the holidays alone or someone who may need a visit to brighten their day, so invite them in for a meal or visit them and spend some quality time to show you care.

You can also make a donation of your money or time. We all know there are many worthy organizations out there that need help this time of year, from Make a Wish to Meals on Wheels, these nonprofits do so much good in the world and we can let them know how much we appreciate them by making a year-end donation from yourself or in honor of a loved one. If you are low on cash, you can also donate your time to help the same organization.

Tell someone how much you appreciate them in a handwritten note or letter. It’s so easy and meaningful to write out your appreciation and thank someone like a coach, a caregiver, a mentor, a colleague or someone in your family who has helped you in life.

Pay it forward. Literally by paying for the person behind you in the coffee shop, grocery store or drive through window. It’s a simple way to show kindness to a complete stranger and it’s really a lot of fun to give without expecting anything in return.

And finally, consider giving a compliment to someone on a talent, skill or strength that you admire. It’s one of the easiest ways to give back and it doesn’t cost a dime to make someone’s day.
